Gradings

White Belt (Beginner)

White signifies innocence, like that of a beginning student who has no previous knowledge of Ju Jitsu.

Yellow Belt (5th kyu)

The colour yellow signifies the earth. The beginning student begins to create a firm foundation in Ju Jitsu technique, just as a seed begins to expand its root system deep in the earth as it begins to grow.

Orange Belt (4th kyu)

The colour orange signifies the changes of Autumn, as the student's mind and body begin to develop and grow as a result of the new Ju Jitsu experience

Green Belt (3rd kyu)

The colour green represents growth, like that of the green plant as it sprouts out of the ground. The student has built a firm foundation and now begins to grow in the art of Ju Jitsu.

Blue Belt (2nd kyu)

The colour blue represents the sky. Reminding the student to reach for the heavens and continue their Ju Jitsu journey. as once again the student undergoes a new change and prepares for the transition to advanced student.

Brown Belt (one strip) (1st kyu)

The colour brown with one white strip at the ends of the belt signifies to the student to temper there newly found skills and techniques with control and wisdom.

Brown Belt (two strip) (1st kyu)

The colour brown with two white strips at the ends of the belt represents the ripening or maturing process as that of the advanced Ju Jitsu student whose techniques are beginning to mature.

Brown Belt (1st kyu)

The dawn of a new day. The sun breaks through the darkness." The previous day has ended, giving way to a new dawn. The student must begin a new phase of training; that of being a black belt. The red is the sun (in a sunrise) as it breaks through the black of night.

Black Belt (Dan)

The opposite of white signifies maturity and dignity, as that of a senior student of Ju Jitsu who has learned the curriculum, knowledge, proficiency and involvement in the promotion and growth and is ready to become a true student of the art of Ju Jitsu. the black belt marks the beginning of the master ranks.

N.B. Remember the attitude, etiquette, manners and above all the spirit displayed by the student whilst grading is as important as the techniques and combinations themselves.
